Decrease of physicochemical activity of the pulmonary surfactant induced by toxic contaminants of the atmosfheric air
Dynamic surface-active properties of the pulmonary surfactant constituents were investigated experimentally. Changes of the activity after surfactant contact with toxic compound present in the air (e.g., SO2, H2SO4, NOx, HNO3, O-3, NH3) were evaluated using Langmuir - Wilhelmy balance (LWB) or pulsating bubble surfactometer (PBS). The observed decrease of the surface activity suggests mechanisms of pulmonary toxicity of inhaled xenobiotics.
