Intraoral implant for drug delivery in addiction and chronic disease treatment
Drug delivery implant which occupies a space of a single or two molar teeth was constructed. Using purified water from saliva, a drug solution is prepared, then it is released via small valve to the drug release port on the buccal side of the device. To increase drug transport efficiency, electrophoresis was employed, electric current quickly leads drug ions into the mucosa saving drug molecules from being swallowed, which leads to complete digestion or much lower bioavailability. A general design and research on drug transport to mucosa are presented.
