Analysis of the membrane bioreactor in which both cells and the substrate were held up at least partially showed that the efficiency of the bioreactor operation was affected by the coefficients psi and eta(s). Selection of a proper pair of parameters psi and eta(s) was a typical optimization task which could be accomplished after formulating an optimization criterion.
