Drying of wet porous material using a combined convective and microwave dryer of laboratory scale
A laboratory-scale combined convective and microwave dryer was manufactured conveniently by reforming a commercial microwave oven. Both combined drying and convective-only drying experiments were performed using the dryer, and drying rates of a wet porous material were measured. Increase of the drying rate was observed in the case of combined drying near the critical moisture content, and the overall drying time of the combined drying became a half of the convective one. The dependency on moisture content of the heat generated in the wet material by the microwave was calculated from the two sets of drying results, and found to be large.
