Autohesion to rubber and compounds - Measuring and influencing variables
The assembly tackiness of significance for the manufacture of complex elastomer products is subject to a number of influences. Crucial parameters are the compatibility, rheology, microstructure and chain mobility of the polymers, the chemical constitution of compound surfaces, ambient parameters and ageing behavior. A patented tackmeter has been developed for practice-relevant measurement of tackiness and for systematic testing aimed at arriving a better understanding of the respective mechanisms. This tackmeter is specialized in measuring "tack" on convex surfaces. The distinctive characteristics of the principle are high accuracy and precision in the measurement of tack. The capability of the measuring methodology is shown as an example of autohesion. Surface analysis by means of ATR-FT-IR spectroscopy parallel to the adhesion measurements shows the impact that chemical changes on compound surfaces have on adhesion.
