This article introduces the combination of a Transfermix extruder with a gear pump. The advantages there of are that the plasticization process of the compound is performed by the Transfermix extruder while the pressure build-up is undertaken by the gear pump. The separation of these two processes opens up new degrees of freedom for the optimisation of the mixing efficiency in the Transfermix extruder. Test results verify that by freeing the extruder of performing the pressure build-up, a significant increase in throughput for comparative extruder sizes is achieved. Furthermore due to the high pressures achievable by the gear pump, throughput becomes virtually independent of current standard die tool pressures.
