A new method and measuring device to investigate the processability of rubber compounds (PROCESSABILITY TESTER) is presented. The purpose of the new test method is to investigate the processability of compounds within the scope of extrusion and profile shaping. The measuring device is based on a specifically configured cold fed pin barrel extruder which is equipped with a die for extruding a particular sample profile. The device is especially featured by a short screw and a quickly variable pin configuration. With the measuring device, samples are extruded. During the extrusion several selected state conditions of the process and quality criterions of the product are measured. To do so the quality characteristics have been defined as well as a rating catalogue for the grading of quality criterions has been created. The set of characteristics is converted in a chart which is in fact a fingerprint of the processability of the applied compound.
