Continuous mixing of rubber compounds
The continously growing requirements to the production processes in the rubber industry due to increasing competition and increasing economic pressure led to a refining of the technology of the continuous mixing. This continuous mixing process as already applied in the thermoplastics industry is done on co-rotating twin screw extruders. Parts of the industry expect to increase the homogeneity of the compounds' quality, to reduce costs by the elimination of various process steps and to open possibilities for a higher degree of automatisation in the rubber procssing. The process properties of the continuous mixing were investigated and analysed by running trials on a 58 mm co-rotating twin screw extruder. Looking at the relevant questions for the practical field use, if the quality generally is on a satisfying and sufficient level and the maximum achievable output also economical questiones were analyzed and compared with the traditiontal batchmixing.
