Catalysts for the reaction of aromatic isocyanates with aromatic anhydrides to form imides were investigated using a model reaction. Alkali metal acetylacetone chelate compounds exhibited good catalytic efficiency and selectivity in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). These catalysts were used for the preparation of polyimide foams. The resulting foams exhibited excellent fire resistance and thermal stability.
