Realities restraining North American capacity expansion
The boom of gas-fired combined-cycle capacity is now in the bust phase. Between 1998 and 2007, gas-fired capacity additions dwarf those for coal-fired capacity. Some 1 1,500 MW of coal-fired capacity is expected to be added over the period-only about one-fourth of the 43,400 MW originally proposed. Analysts can find several culprits for the expansion restraint.
