Combined-cycle merchant plants have been the mainstay of power project development in the U.S. over the past several years. Although developers' pro formas assumed extended baseload operation for these plants, many have been pressed into cycling service to generate revenue. Two new manuals from EPRI detail the steps developers can take before and after an HRSG is commissioned to minimize the unique stresses that cycling imposes on its tubes.
