Everyone knows that we should stop depending upon petroleum. But for now, it's just too cheap, at least compared with the alternatives. And this is as true for its use as a chemical feedstock as for its use as a fuel. For example, the vast majority of the plastics in use today are derived from the hydrocarbons found in petroleum. But there are other possibilities.
