The IR and UV spectra of modified polyvinyl alcohol with the following structure were investigated : [GRAPHICS] (x = 1-3; R = alkyl radical, preferably methyl). The specific absorptions were identified and correlated with the structural changes produced by the chemical and heat treatment of the polymer precursor.
