Fractional control limits for np control chart
This paper presents a fractional control limits (FCL) scheme for the attribute np control charts. The FCL scheme enables the Quality Assurance (QA) engineers to have more control on the designs of the np charts. In particular, the in-control ARL(0) (Average Run Length) produced by the FCL np chart can be set exactly at any specified level, so that the sum of the costs incurred by false alarms and nonconforming units is hopefully close to the minimum. The FCL np chart is also capable of detecting the downward (or decreasing) p (fraction nonconforming) shifts. By comparing the operating characteristics of the FCL np chart with that of the conventional ICL (Integral Control Limits) up chart, it can be seen that the former has the potential of improving the overall operating characteristics of the np charts. Furthermore, the design of the FCL np chart is simple and the operation is also easy and economic. To implement the FCL np charts the randomized decision rules and a simple Monte Carlo procedure are used.
