Modification of the silica surface with surfactants and their strengthening effect on elastomers
Silica filler for ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) was modified, 3 phr, with surfactants. Conventional dispersants reduced the minimum torque and slightly increased the tensile strength of EPR. Octadecyltrimethoxysilanol gave max. rise in tensile strength. Alkylbenzyldimethylammonium bromide, 3 phr, resulted in best mech. property data and a very high torque.
