Fatty acid-polyolester emulsifiers synthesized from renewable raw materials
Modified acylglycerol emulsifiers prepd. by esterifying FINA Chemicals' Radiacid 416 contg. stearic 64.4, palimitic 27.9 and myristic acid 2.1%, or individual C12-C18 acids, with glycerol or Et or Pr glycol, 1/1 (or 1.25)/(0.07 or 0.15 Na, K, Zn or Mg soap) by mole, at 798 hPa in inert-gas atm., were used to prep. (x/(100-x) w/w) O/W (x = 20, 40, 50, 60, 80; 0 = paraffin oil or (9:1) paraffin oil-ceresin) model emulsions at room temp. With Et and Pr glycols and Na alkanoate, HLB was 4.5-5.8 and 3.5-4.6, resp. With stearin and the 12:0, 14:0, 16:0 or 18:0 acid and K alkanoate, HLB ranged from 5.4 to 7.7; with lauroylglycerol emulsifiers modified with Na, K, Mg or Zn soap, HILB was 7.9, 7.7. 5.5 and 5.6, resp. Droplet size distribution (<3 mum, 80-90%) varied only slightly with HLB emulsifiers.
