Properties of the dispersed systems stabilized with monoacylglycerol-ethoxylated methyl alkanoate mixtures
Methyl dodecanoate (X) and a mixt. of methyl C-8-C-18 alkanoates (Z), each ethoxylated with an av. 10 or 15 EO groups, were used to emulsify W/O or O/W models prepd. by adding a conductivity-grade (1 mS/m) water (W) and a mixed emulsifier (5% best) to a paraffin oil (O) at 80 degrees C and 350 rpm with stirring continued until the dispersed system attained room temp. The 14 emulsifiers were (9:1), (5:5), (2:8) or (1:9 w/w) X-Z mixts. varying in HLB from 5.0 to 15.2. The > 60% O emulsions stabilized with the (5:5) X-Z (15 and 10 EO groups; HLB 10.1 and 9.6) inverted at 41 and 40 degrees C, resp., and a portion of oil sepd. The emulsifiers gave O/W and W/O emulsions, contg. up to 40% of the dispersed phase.
