The electrooxidation of metanol adsorbates on platinum and rhodium
Properties of the thin-layer Pt and Rh electrodes deposited on Au were intercompared in electro-adsorption and desorption of MeOH. Cyclic voltammetry (in 0.5 M H2SO4) and electrochem. stripping methods were used. At low potentials, MeOH adsorbate blocked the electrode surface. On Pt, the adsorbate was oxidized, and the surface cleaned, at > 0.6 V On Rh, desorption was max. at 0.75 V The difference of 0.2 V between Pt and Rh in the starting potentials of oxide layer formation had no effect on the MeOH oxidn. catalyzing properties. The O species formed on Rh were inactive toward the MeOH adsorbate, but helped it to become desorbed As an alloy component, Rh improved the MeOH adsorption properties of Pt. Adsorption on Pt was fast and the adsorbate was strongly bonded.
