Studies on bisphenol-A polycarbonate synthesis by melt transesterification
Me(2)CO(3) was transesterified with PhOH to a mixt. of Ph(2)CO(3) and PhMeCO(3) converted then to oligomeric polycarbonates (PC) by catalytic distn. with (p-HOC(6)H)(2)CMe(2) in presence of Bu(2)SnO catalyst. The oligomers were polycondensed under addn. of Ph(2)CO(3) in presence of Ph(3)Sb or Bu(2)SnO catalysts at 200-260 degrees C to high-mol. PC. The moL mass of the resulting PC increased up to above 35000 g/mol with increasing polycondn. temp. when Bu(2)SnO was used as catalyst. The excess of OH groups in prepd. PC was esterified wit Ph(2)CO(3) in the 2nd stage of polycondensation.
