Production of chemically cross-linked, foamed poly(ethene-co-vinyl acetate). Effect of polymer mixture composition and pressure employed on the product properties
Com. CH(2)=CH(2)/CH(2)=CHOAc copolymer (27% of CH(2)=CHOAc) was blended by rolling with com. antioxidants, CaCO(3), ZnO, azodicarbonamide (blowing agent) and (PhCMe(2))(2)O(2) initiator at 105-120 degrees C for 10 min, formed by pressing to 3 mm thick plates and then foamed under pressure at 180 degrees C for 4 min. After ageing at room temp. for 72 h the foamed plates were studied for apparent d., Shore hardness, gelation no., cross-linking degree, tensile strength and elongation at fracture. The foam d. was 0.11-0.15 g/cm(3), foaming ratio 5-7.5, hardness 15-21 degrees ShA, cross-linking degree 66-83%, tensile strength 1000-2300 kPa and elongation at break 200-320%. The increase in pressure and initiator content resulted in an increase of all quality parameters of the material except for the foaming ratio and elongation at break.
