Rapid Electrochemical Quantification of Food Borne Pathogen Staphylococcus Aureus Based on Hydrogen Peroxide Degradation by Catalase
In the present study an electrochemical method for quantification of catalase positive pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus has been established by monitoring hydrogen peroxide consumption at Pt microelectrode. Hydrogen peroxide consumption was measured amperometrically at 650 mV. Different parameters such as hydrogen peroxide concentration, reaction time with hydrogen peroxide, pH and temperature were optimized. The developed methodology allowed the detection of Staphylococcus aureus at concentration levels of approximately 10 CFU/mL in assay time of 10 mm without any pre-enrichment procedure. This electrochemical approach was also successfully applied to detect S.aureus in various food samples (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. [DOT: 10.1149/2.026306jes] All rights reserved.
