Studies on Bis Annulated Triazinyl Pyridine (BATP) using Extraction Chromatography
2,6-Bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)pyridine (BATP) was synthesized and impregnated on XAD-7 resin and the extraction performance of this BATP/XAD-7 resin was investigated for the uptake of Am(III) and lanthanides from nitric acid media in batch experiments. The performance of the BATP/XAD-7 resin was compared with that of 2,6-bis(5,6-dipropyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine (n-Pr-BTP) impregnated XAD-7. It was observed that BATP/XAD-7 displayed higher Am(III)/Eu(III) separation factors, better selectivity and faster kinetics for a much lower wt% loading of the extractant than n-Pr-BTP/XAD-7. Column experiments for the separation of Am(III) from lanthanides by extraction chromatography using BATP/XAD-7 gave good results; however, the loaded Am(III) was retained very strongly in the column and could not be eluted.
