An acid base-responsive fabric was fabricated by combining a facile chemical deposition of micro- and nanostructure CuO microspheres with the following assembly of mixed thiols (containing HS(CH2)(17)CH3 and HS(CH2)(10)COOH). It was found that the hierarchical CuO fabric modified with mixed thiols containing 0.8 molar ratio of HS(CH2)(10)COOH shows good pH responsivity, which can switch between high hydrophobicity for an acid and a superhydrophilicity for base.
