Supplement to: a simple quantum mechanical model for the contribution of electronic surface states to surface stress, strength and electrocapillarity of solids
Having supposed the potential energy of the electrons in a solid is the sum of three functions each of which depends only on one of the co-ordinates x, y and z, the Schrodinger equation is separable and a model for a 3-D solid can be assembled by the 1-D sub-systems. In an earlier paper, approximate calculations were carried out of the surface charge density, the surface free energy, the surface stress and a near-surface stress for this model of a solid. In the present paper, the correct formulae are given for the computation of the mentioned surface parameters at an arbitrary temperature and for an arbitrary position of the Fermi-level. The relation between the near-surface stress and the fatigue limit of a body is mentioned.
