Mathematical modelling of buccal iontophoretic drug delivery system
The aim of this work is to numerically model the process of electrophoretic drug transport through buccal mucosa. The process was described for two electrode geometrical placement systems: opposite and concentric. Naltrexone HCl was used as a model drug. COMSOL Multiphysics software was applied for calculations. The modelling revealed that both geometries of iontophoretic port can deliver pharmacologically sufficient drug flux that gets to the reach of the capillary blood vessels region of the tissue. The opposite model, which enabled transdermal and transmucosal administration, proved more promising. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
