Distributed control of plant-wide chemical processes with uncertain time-delays
This paper presents a distributed control approach for large and complex process plants with uncertain time-delays such as variable transport delays in the physical flow between process units and communication delays in the distributed controller network. In this framework, a plant-wide process is modeled as a network of linear time-invariant process units and is controlled by a network of distributed controllers. Using such a network representation, the effects of delay uncertainties on plant-wide stability and performance are studied based on the concept of dissipativity. A controller design procedure that takes into account the delay uncertainties is also formulated, which allows each distributed controller to be designed individually. This leads to an autonomous and distributed control strategy that can efficiently handle the effects of time-delays in both the process and controller networks. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
