Characterization of Polymer/Liquid Crystal Composite Films Fabricated by UV-Curing
Effects of several factors such as concentration of photoinitiator, multifunctional monomers, chain length of oligomers, and curing temperature, etc. on the electro-optic properties of the polymer/LC composite films fabricated by UV-curing method were investigated. It was verified that some optimum range of photoinitiator concentration should be required for completing the polymerization reaction of mixture without severely disturbing the TNI of LC phase. Driving voltage of films tended to be higher, with increasing crosslinkable monomer in the formulation, while the response time of the film became faster. Driving voltage, however, tended to decrease as the ratio of relatively longer chain length oligomer in the formulation increased. It was observed that elevated polymerization temperature during UV irradiation could cause higher initial transmittance and, therefore, decreased the contrast ratio of the resulting film.
