Influence of Thermally Aged Resole on Properties of Resole-Cured Butyl Rubber Vulcanizate

Molecular weight distribution and types of terminal and linkage of resoles were changed by thermal reactions. Chemical and physical properties of butyl rubber vulcanizates cured by heated resoles were studied. It was found that lengths of the crosslinks in the heated resole-cured vulcanizate are shorter than those of the raw resole-cured one. The increments of the tensile strength of the heated resole-cured vulcanizates with and increase of the crosslink density were higher than that of the raw resole-cured one. The breaking elongation of the heated resole-cured vulcanizates was longer than that of the raw resole-cured one when they had the same crosslink density. The fatigue life of the vulcanizate cured by the raw resole was longer than those of the vulcanizates cured by the heated ones. The differences of the physical properties of the vulcanizates depending on the resole type were explained by the crosslink density and the length and type of the crosslinks.
