Effect of Shearing on the Liquid Crystallinity of Polymer Blends Containing Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polyurethane

Thermotropic polyurethanes (PUnT; n=2, 6, 8, 11) were synthesized from 4,4''''-bis(ω-hydroxyalkoxy)biphenyls (BPn; 2, 6, 8, 11) and 2,5-tolylene diisocyate (2,5-TDI). Polymer blends compositions. The effect of shearing on the liquid crystallinity of the polymer blends was investigated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, polarized optical microscope observation, and X-ray diffractometry. The liquid crystallinity was shown in the polymers PU6T, PU8T and PU11T but it was not in PU2T. Polymer blends PU6T/PU8T and PU8T/PU11T showed a monotropic liquid crystallinity, however, PU2T/PU11T did not.
