Properties of Butyl Rubber Vulcanizates Cured by Different Type Resoles

Variations of crosslink densities and physical properties of the butyl rubber vulcanizates cured by three different type resoles before and after the oven/steam aging at 90℃ for 7 days were studied. The crosslink densities of all the steam-aged vulcanizates become lower than those of the unaged ones. The crosslink densities of the long chain resole-cured vulcanizates after the oven aging increase but those of the short chain resole-cured ones after the oven aging decrease. Sources to change the crosslink densities of the vulcanizates by the aging were found to be dissociation of the dimethylene ether linkage and combination of the pendent resoles. The modulus, tensile strength, breaking elongation, and tear strength of the long chain resole-cured vulcanizates show different trends from those of the short chain resole-cured ones. The fatigue lives of all the aged vulcanizates are longer than those of the unaged ones.
Variations of the physical properties of the vulcanizates depending on the resole type before and after the aging were explained by crosslink type as well as crosslink density.
