A study on the Characterization of Etherification in Diamine Cured Epoxy System

The relative importance of etherification in relation to amine-epoxide reaction was investigated in the curing of the stoichiometric mixture of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A(DGEBA) and 4.4''-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS). A kinetic model for amine-epoxide reaction, taking into account the possibility of simultaneous etherification, was generated to quantify the extent of etherification over a wide range of cure temperatures. Satisfactory agreement was obtained for cure kinetics between the model prediction and the experimental data from both IR and DSC. From this comparison, the value for 0.8 with r equal to 0.8, the specific rate constant for etherification (k3) was found to be about 15 times smaller than the corresponding constant for primary amines (k1). Approximately, 5 to 10 percent of the epoxide is consumed by etherification, and it becomes increasingly significant at higher cure temperature and the extent of epoxide reaction.
