Synthesis and Characterization of PET Copolyesters Bearing Carbazole Pendants
A series of copolyesters consisting of the oxyethyleneoxyterephthaloyl (ET) unit and the oxyethyleneoxy-(2-carbazolyl)terephthaloyl (ECT) unit were prepared and their properties were characterized. The copolyesters containing higher than 20 mole % of the comonomer unit, i.e., the ECT unit, were amorphous according to the wide-angle x-ray diffractometry analysis. The glass transition temperature of the copolyesters increased steadily with increasing content of the ECT unit; from 66℃ for PET to 103℃ for PECT. All of the copolyesters exhibited photoluminescence (PL) in solution as well as in thin films. the wavelength of emitted light by the thin films ranged from about 425 to 600 nm with maximum emission occurring at about 490 nm. Polymer solutions, however, exhibited an additional luminescence with maximum emitted light intensity at 410 nm. the shape of solution emission spectra showed a strong dependence on the polymer concentration and composition. PECT doped with 3 mole% of p-chloranil demonstrated an appreciable photoconductivity.
