A case study of ten NEDO-funded research and development projects in chemical engineering was conducted to consider an indicator to evaluate the commercialization of R & D results. Analysis revealed a correlation between the commercialization rate of R & D results and the registration rate of patent applications. From the findings, it is suggested that it is appropriate to adopt patent registration rate as an evaluation indicator of R & D results aiming at commercialization.
