Volumetric Measurements of Liquid Pentan-2-One, Hexan-2-One, and 4-Methylpentan-2-One at Temperatures from 278.15 K to 338.13 K and Pressures in the Range from 0.1 MPa to 386 MPa
A bellows volumometer has been used to obtain volume ratios relative to p = 0.1 MPa for each of the liquids pentan-2-one, hexan-2-one, and 4-methylpentan-2-one at the temperatures (278.15, 288.15, 298.14, 313.14, 323.14, and 338.13) K for pressures up to 386 MPa or close to the freezing pressure, whichever is the lower. A correlation which uses a modification of the Tait equation predicts that the volumetric properties of the present compounds are usually close to the experimental error. The correlation is based on a modified Tait equation for butan-2-one which has been generalised by including an allowance for each methylene group added to produce the higher order ketone. The correlation is not as successful for propanone or pentan-3-one. The experimental volumetric data have been used to evaluate the effects of pressure on isothermal compressibility, isobaric thermal expansivity, and isobaric heat capacity.
