Generic ceramic tooling (GenCerT) for the SPF/DB process
This paper describes the current research being conducted by members of the Aerospace Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK, into improving the Superplastic Forming and Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB) process. The Centre is primarily interested in novel ways of improving the technology of the process much of which, although now well refined, has changed, conceptually, little in the last twenty-five years. Thus the Centre is conducting research into a new tooling regimen the overall objective of which is to reduce the cost of SPF/DB tooling by 50%. This is considered achievable by abandoning the prevailing concept of extending the life of metallic tools, using instead low cost, disposable ceramic liners, containing all component geometry and located within a generic metal support device.
