The effect of inert additives on the activation period of mechanically-induced self-propagating reactions
The effect of inert additives on the mechanically-induced self-propagating reaction in equimolar Zn-S powder mixtures has been investigated. The addition of Al2O3 or ZrO2 does not change the ignition time substantially, but more than about 25 vol.% renders the reaction gradual. If NaCl is added to the Zn-S mixture, the ignition time increases linearly and it almost triples before the reaction becomes gradual. The effect of Ni addition was also studied. Ni reacted with S itself, therefore it is not entirely inert in the Zn-S system. These observations are very different from the steady increase of the ignition time usually assumed.
