Does lithology affect illite and chlorite crystallinities?
Lithological composition, grain size, illite and chlorite crystallinities (IC and ChC), and b(0)-values of white mica have been determined on three elastic turbidite sequences from the Harz Mountains (Germany) and from the Swedish Caledonides, representing different lithologies within Bouma cycles. Both illite and chlorite crystallinities indicate anchizonal metamorphic conditions for all samples. According to the b(0) values of white mica the metamorphism was of low to medium pressure type. There are no significant variations of these three parameters throughout the sequences. Differences in lithological parameters, i.e., grain size and modal composition obviously do not affect both illite and chlorite crystallinities and b(0) parameters of white mica. Illite and chlorite crystallinities are not dependent on the average grain size of the bulk rock and the modal composition, regarding the main phases.
