Sizes and shapes of crystallites in mullites produced by thermal treatment of kaolin-alumina mixture
The crystalline microstructure of mullites produced at different temperatures by reactive sintering of kaolin-alumina or by sintering of kaolin has been studied through XRD powder methods. The microstructure of each sample has been roughly characterised by apparent crystallite sizes and strains and updated by modelling the real crystalline structure with parameters taken after experimental XRD data through solving an inverse problem The model explains clearly the formation of the secondary mullite.
