Graphitisation model of spheroidal graphite cast iron taking into account stress/diffusion coupling
As part of a study devoted to the high temperature behavior of SG cast iron, graphite precipitation and dissolution resulting from thermal cycling (between 950 and 800degreesC) in the austenitic field, has been previously investigated. It was reported that predictions assuming purely diffusive transfer of carbon did not agree with the measured times for dimensional changes. This paper presents a model that was developed to estimate the internal stresses due to thermal expansion mismatch and to carbon transfer between graphite and austenite. Calculations based on this model predicted that significant levels of stresses and plastic deformation are generated during thermal cycling.
