The concept of functionally graded materials (FGMs) was proposed in 1984 by materials scientists in the Sendai area as a means of preparing thermal barrier materials. During 20 years period the concept of FGM's has spread into almost all traditional technical and/or scientific fields, through many national projects in Japan. As the results, many commercial applications have been developed. Some of them are the joint work of University/National institute and Industry. Last June 14, FGM Forum held entitled "Workshop on the industrial application of FGMs". Over ten industrial companies presented new application of FGM in several technical fields. These are machining tool, optical fiber, optical filter, surface materials for wristwatch, blade of electric shaver, spike for baseball shoes etc. In this paper, I explain new commercial application of FGM in Japan and discuss what shall we, FGM Forum, do for prosperity of FGM.
