Functionally graded boron carbide-aluminum composites
Continuous and stepwise graded multilayer boron carbide-aluminum composites have been produced by melt infiltration of performs prepared by sequential centrifugal casting and by tape casting and lamination, respectively. A low-temperature, short time infiltration process has been developed, significantly suppressing the reaction product formation. Microstructure development as a function of the different processing conditions and the corresponding spatial variations in hardness are characterized.
