Characterization of plasma facing SiC/C functionally graded material
The technology of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) enables the realization of innovative and multiple functions that can't be achieved with conventional homogeneous materials. Predetermined chemical composition profiles associate with predetermined transitions in their microstructure. In order to use FGMs in practical applications, it is necessary to characterize their properties. In this paper, the properties of plasma facing bulk SiC/C FGMs, including thermal fatigue, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance and plasma erosion etc., were evaluated. The results indicate that the bulk SiC/C FGM possesses excellent thermal shock resistance. Compared with CVI and CVD SiC/C FGM and SiC coating, the bulk SiC/C FGM has much thicker SiC Surface layer and combines the excel lent plasma-erosion resistance of SiC with the high thermal-conductivity and good thermal shock resistance of carbon. It is ail important candidate material employed for fusion technology in the future.
