Quantum sized chromophores in vanadium ceramic pigments
0,1V(2)O(5)-0,0SnO(2) and 0,1V(2)O(5)-0,9ZrO(2) compositions were fired at 900, 1100 and 1200degreesC and powders were glazed in a conventional tile glaze. Powders were characterized by XDR, SEM microscopy and IR spectroscopy and cell parameters of zirconia were measured. Glazed samples were analysed by UV-V-NIR reflectance diffuse spectroscpy and colourimteric CIEL*a*b* measurements. The glazed samples shows nanocrystal semiconductor-doped glass appearance with quantum size values estimated by an elementary electron-hole in a box model. Firing temperature controls the size of particles that varies in the range 2-4 nm in cassiterite samples and 3-7 nm in zirconia samples on the range of checked temperatures.
