Aluminum alloyed cast iron as an ecomaterial
Cast iron series containing aluminum are not encountered very often these days, but since they contain only abundant elements found in the earth's crust such as iron, carbon, silicon and aluminum, their recyclability makes them extremely useful alloys. Therefore, the authors have been examined various properties of aluminum alloyed cast iron. In the present study we added aluminum to cast iron and examined its structure, its wear resistance and high-temperature oxidation resistance, as well as their mechanisms. As a result, we found that the addition of aluminum to cast iron improved the wear resistance and high-temperature oxidation resistance. Wear resistance was enhanced by the crystallization of iron-aluminum carbides, while high-temperature oxidation resistance was improved by the formation of a protective alumina film. And also this cast iron can be easily surface modified to obtain high wear resistance. Since this series can provide very useful materials at a low price, we predict that it will come into use as an ecomaterial.
