Mechanical properties and microstructure of new Ni free white Cu alloy
In order to develop a Ni-free copper alloy to substitute for Nickel Silver that produces the same whitish color, we examined the effects of additional elements on the color of copper alloys. The result shows that Ti gives copper the same white color as Ni, and that the Cu-10at%Zn-5at%Ti alloy has the same whitish color as Nickel Silver. Naturally with the lack of Ni presence, there are no skin irritations resulting from Ni. In this study, we examined the mechanical properties, and the effects of aging treatment on the hardness and microstructure of the Cu-Zn-Ti alloy. The super saturated solid solution was formed by solution treatment at 1153K for 18ks, and had good cold formability up to 80% reduction in thickness. The hardness of the Cu-10at%Zn-5at%Ti alloy increased from Hv135 to Hv253 after aging at 773K for 30min. The peak hardness value of the Cu-10at%Zn-3at%Ti alloy was lower than the commercial Cu-3at%Ti alloy. This is presumably due to a larger amount of retained Ti in Cu matrix as compared with the Cu-3%Ti alloy, and the amount of precipitates in the aged the Cu-Zn-Ti alloy decreases.
