Physical and chemical properties of basalt, e.g., strength and hydrolytic stability, depend on a large part on the degree of crystallization, oxidation and surface properties. Here, we provide an overview on first results on the kinetics of crystallization and oxidation of natural basalt glass (Hawaii) that has a comparatively low oxidation state.
