Finite element analysis in pulsed GTA weldments
A three dimensional transient non linear finite element model for heat transfer and grain growth analysis of pulsed current gas tungsten arc weldments is described. Features such as temperature dependent material properties, heat loss due to convection and radiation, heat loss due vaporization of alloying elements, latent heat of melting and solidification are incorporated in the model. Results on the effect of pulsing parameters on the grain growth in the HAZ region of austenitic stainless steel (304) weldments are presented. Studies on grain growth indicated that there exists an optimum frequency value for least grain growth. This result is of industrial importance since least grain growth in HAZ is desired.
