Advances in processing technology for powder-metallurgical tool steels and high speed steels giving excellent cleanliness and homogeneity
Powder-metallurgical tool steels have been known for about 30 years. Their enhanced properties when compared to standard materials have made them particularly attractive for special applications. Various production techniques for PM-materials have been developed and used over the years. Parallel to that, the development of special PM-tool and high speed steels has taken place. Important features in PM tool steels and high speed steels are homogeneity and the absence of non metallic impurities as they may have a detrimental effect on tool performance. New processing technologies in atomization and consolidation of PM steels mean, it is now possible to reach cleanliness levels which are usually only found after double remelt or VAR processing. Recently a new large scale production unit within the Bohler-Uddeholm Group started operation with a combination of new technologies for inert gas atomisation and improved hot isostatic pressing. The process design of this new plant and results of the materials we have produced in large scale will be shown.
