Importance of ball-milling for the sintering of yttria dispersed W alloys
The present paper highlights the marked influence of the ball milling parameters, i.e. the nature of the milling media (atmosphere, vial and balls) and of some grinding parameters (rotation speed, size and number of balls), as well as of the primitive composition of the powder blend (W+Y or W+Y2O3) on its microstructure. It also deals with the consequences of this microstructure for the mechanism and thereby easiness of sintering of yttria dispersed W alloys. The interests of vacuum sintering and of long milling times for both a high sintered density and a small growth of the size of the grains during sintering are in particular demonstrated.
