Ecomaterials; concept, practice and future
An overview of the research and development of ecomaterials is described. The concept of ecomaterials has been proposed in early 90th, and it is distributing by connecting with Eco-design and Life-cycle designing. The progress of the concept and the development on Ecomaterials through five meetings of International Ecomaterials Conference and related symposiums and workshops are highlighted. Functional materials for environmental protection and materials supporting low-emission systems gave important contributions to various environmental issues as materials technology. The global environmental issue, i.e. limit of the environment, poses us new subjects on materials technology. Materials' technology for life-cycle design for the environment is developed to solve the problem. The key-items of these ecomaterials are "hazardous substance free", "green environmental profile", "recyclable", and "high material-efficiency". These key items realize the life-cycle eco-efficiency considerations. Practical solutions of ecomaterials are developed these ten years, and are illustrated in the presentation. The next step is to combine the ecomaterials' development to the conceptual change of the designing such as the design for the environment or Eco-design.
